Governor Dauda Lawal has urged the African Development Bank (AfDB) to include Zamfara State in the upcoming Phase 2 of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) program. The appeal was made during a presentation on Saturday at a meeting between Northwest Governors and AfDB President, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina.

The SAPZ program is designed to curtail the export of raw agricultural commodities by fostering local processing. A statement from Zamfara Governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that Zamfara missed out on Phase 1 in 2021 but is set to benefit from Phase 2 due to Governor Lawal's intervention.

Highlighting the potential impact, the statement asserted that the inclusion of Northwest States, including Zamfara, in the SAPZ program's next phase will contribute significantly to Nigeria's economic transformation, fostering growth and development in the agricultural sector.

During the meeting, the Northwest Governors, representing Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna, conveyed key regional concerns to AfDB President Adesina. These concerns encompassed security, human capital development, and agriculture, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these aspects in influencing the overall well-being and prosperity of the people.

"The meeting with Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has opened doors of opportunity for the seven states in the region," stated Governor Lawal. "Through collaboration with the African Development Bank, Northwest Governors aim to create a safer and more conducive environment, attracting investments and fostering sustainable economic growth."

The African Development Bank has expressed interest in supporting Nigeria's Northwest region, with President Adesina commending the Governors for prioritizing the well-being of their citizens. The Bank's involvement is expected to empower the Northwest Governors in addressing crucial challenges and promoting overall regional development.
